In 2005 West Africa (Niger, Mali, Mauritania and Burkina Faso) was wit by a major food shortage caused by severe droughts and a huge locust invasion which swept the area during the growing season and destroyed the harvest. Over eight million people in West Africa were at risk of severe hunger and malnutrition.
Following an appeal in the media by all major charities in the UK, As-Suffa Institute raises almost £20,000 and donated it to the leading charity Islamic Relief.
