Question:

Regarding the Thobes that we wear, is the Sunnah one only the one with the splits on the side, like the Shalwar Kameez? The clothes above the ankles also, is there a hadith wihich says that the cloths that hang lower than the ankles will be in Jahanaam? is it fardh to do that?

Answer:

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did wear a Jubah however I have not been able to find any narration in the well known books on hadith and Shamail stating it had slits on the sides.

There are many ahadith that prohibit emphatically lowering the garment below the ankles. For example, Imam Abu Daud narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said; "Whoever allows the garment to go below the ankles from pride, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Judgement" If an Imam is doing this one should avoid praying behind him.
