Hair dye

Question:

Are women allowed to use Hair dye, because some say you should not have black hair? So are we allowed to dye our hair other then black?

Answer:

Provided the intention is not to imitate, it is permissible to dye one's hair other than black. Imam Ibn al-Qayyim narrates a hadith in his book "Zad al-Ma`ad" in which the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) showed his approval of persons who had coloured their hair using different colours other than black. The reason why black is forbidden is that when Abu Qahafah was brought before the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) on the occassion of the conquest of Makkah his hair were white. The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) seeing this said: "Alter this using something, but avoid black." This hadith is narrated in Sahih Muslim and tells us black is forbidden for men and women, and this is the position of the majority of scholars.
