| Should we accept or reject the evolution theory |
Question:
I have a general question about evolution. Is this a theory/scientific claim that muslims should automatically reject or are there elements of this that are compatible with Islam? Answer:
It is clear from the Quran that we were created by Allah (SWT) and we are the off-spring of first man (Adam A.S.) and woman (Hawah/Eve A.S.). This creation is mentioned in the Quran in the following verses: It is He Who created you from a single person, and made his mate of like nature, in order that he might dwell with her (in love)... (7:189) O mankind! We created you from a single (pair) of a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, that ye may know each other (not that ye may despise (each other). Verily the most honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all things) (49:13) The Qur'an describes how Allah (SWT) created Adam (A.S.): We created man from sounding clay, from mud moulded into shape... (15:26) And made his progeny from a quintessence of the nature of a fluid despised. But He fashioned him in due proportion, and breathed into him something of His spirit. And He gave you (the faculties of) hearing and sight and feeling (and understanding): little thanks do ye give! (32:7-8) Furthermore, Allah (SWT) created all things in the universe including the plantlife and animals and it would be wrong to believe that even these objects have evolved from something. The Quran mentions that Allah (SWT): Do not the Unbelievers see that the heavens and the earth were joined together (as one unit of creation), before we clove them asunder? We made from water every living thing. Will they not then believe? (21:30) And Allah has created every animal from water: of them there are some that creep on their bellies; some that walk on two legs; and some that walk on four. Allah creates what He wills for verily Allah has power over all things (24:45) It is without doubt, the most bizarre logic to observe some minor change in one animal at a particular time and extrapolate that everything has evolved from nothing to the infinantly intricate and thought out design we witness in the world.
