| The Ruh (spirit) and performing Janazah for stillborn babies |
Question:
when a baby dies before birth do you have to do the janazah? Can you explain whether the Ruh is in the baby's body in the womb?
Answer:
A baby that is stillborn, that is it is dead when it comes out, will not have a Salat al-Janazah performed for it. If it is alive at the point it comes out and then dies it will be prayed over, (see Rad al-Muhtar, vol.3 pg.129). According to the hadith, the Ruh is placed in the foetus after 120 days from the time of fertilization, and when it will be said the child is fully alive.
