What is the Awra for females?

Question:

Could you clarify what the awra is infront of fellow muslim females.

Some say that one should cover the shoulders, underarms and upper back.
Others say that awra is the same to that which is a man's awra in front of other men
i.e. from the navel up to and including the knees.

Could you tell me which is correct with evidences. What are the opinion between the different Schools of Thoughts.

Answer:

The awrah for a Muslim woman in front of other Muslim women is the same as it is in front of her close male relatives like her brothers and father.
Namely, she must at all times keep the section between the navel and knees covered as well as her stomach and back (Hidayah vol.7 pg195). If other than this part became revealed in front of them it would not be a sin.
One should however note this does not mean that one should reveal the rest of the body to these women. The reason for this is that due to the prevalence of evil intentions amongst people today it can be a cause of great fitnah.
