Removing upper lip hair

Question:

Is it permissible in islam for a woman to remove the hair of the upper lip?

Answer:

For a woman it is mustahab to remove hair on the upper lip as this is a means of making herself look more attractive for her husband, which is has been commended in many hadith. Once the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) saw a woman and she was looking dishevelled and asked her why she had not made an effort in her appearance. She replied that her husband had become so engrossed in worship he had little desire for her, which led her to her unkempt state. The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) rebuked the companion and thereafter both started having good husband-wife relations, seen by the fact that her appearance thereafter was much neater and attractive. Another hadith that tells a woman should make herself look attractive for her husband are is the hadith in which the Prophet (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) prohibited for a man to return home from a journey unexpectedly. Rather, he should inform his wife of the time of his return so that she can make herself look good for him. (Jami al-Tirmidhi, Kitab al-Istidhaan wal-Adaab).
