| Halal meat in Sweden |
Question:
We have a huge problem, here in Sweden, we don't know what is halal because the Swedish government does not allow halal slaughter. And those that import halal meet or sell halal meet in Sweden say that it is halal, how can we be sure? And if I, for instance, visit some friends and they say that they bought the meet from a Muslim, or from whosoever (just that it isn't pork or other haram meet), can I eat it? What are the rules of fiqh of slaughter? Answer:
It is your duty to investigate and find out the sources of the meat and poultry imports. This should not be too difficult, and provided they come from slaughter houses that are regulated by true Shariah Compliant Organisations such as HMC, then it will be fine to eat the chickens and meat. Normally, it would be fine to accept the meat if it is offered by a Muslim. However due to the pressure of mass production, it has become proven beyond doubt that the Shari laws of slaughter are most often thrown aside rendering the meat haram. Worse than this, is the many scandalous cases that have come to light exposing those who claim to be Muslims, as knowingly buying and selling haram meat. Therefore, because consuming haram is tantamount to eating a poison that nullifies one's duas and deeds, it will not be enough that the person giving you the meat/poultry is Muslim, rather you must investigate. The rules of slaughter briefly are: [1] That the slaughterperson be a mature, sane Muslim. Slaughter using a machine is not allowed, whereby it is not a human being actually doing the cutting. [2] That the slaughterperson recite "Bismillah Allahu Akbar," just before or as he slaughters the animal. [3] The knife must be sharp to prevent unneeded pain. [4] The throat is the place of cutting and it is necessry that three of the four vessels be cut. If only two are cut (eg. the windpipe and one artery) it will render the animal unlawful. [5] Stunning of the animal is not permitted, as it not only can lead to the premature death of the animal, it can be very traumatic for the animal. By spreading awareness and concern of these issues, enough support can be gained that can encourage the Muslim community there to organise themselves and arrange for adequate Shariah compliant products.
