| A question about debt |
Question:
If one owes a brother some money, and has agreed repayment by a certain date, is one considered to be indebted before the debt becomes due? If one acquires enough money, should one go on hajj or repay one's debt? Is one obliged to go on hajj? Should one refrain from giving sadaqa and give the money instead to one's creditor?
Answer:
One is indebted the moment he takes a loan from someone. If then that person acquires money, Hajj will not be obligatory upon him, as the right of his creditor takes precedence according to the Shariah. As long as he is indebted he should be concerned about repaying the debt. To die with a debt outstanding is a major sin.
