marriage issues

Question:

A muslim sister was forced into an arrange marriage at the age of 17 and is now 23. Despite this time she has not been able to get over the bitterness she feels in her heart against the marriage. She has met someone else who she has known for 2 years and they want to marry. She is scared of the consequences if they do due to her family but really wants to obtain a divorce. she is not willing to make things work with her husband. What should she do, and is a divorce justified?

This is a complex issue with many dimensions and as such she should, with a male wali (like father, grandfather etc.), sit with a reliable scholar who she can rely upon, to see how one should proceed. Having said this, there are some things which she should bear in mind presently; namely that according to the Shariah she is in a lawful marital relationship, and to conduct an extra relationship, at whatever level it may be, is severely forbidden and calling on the punishment of Allah taala. At the same time she should turn to Allah taala and ask for his help and pray the Salat al-Haajah (The Prayer of Need).
