Question:

What is the Islamic ruling marriage with the family (to cousins) as is the norm within the Asian commnuity.

Also, is it permissable to marry someone from a diffrent race/nationanality even if the parents don't agree with it. Would a person be comnminiting a sin in disobeying his parents and marrying the person of their choice?

Answer:

It is permitted to marry one's cousin. It is from the conditions of marriage that there be consent and happiness from both sides, there is no place for forced marriages in Islam.

It is permitted to marry from another race and nationality provided the requisite of the concept of Kuff is upheld (parity in Deen, occupation, Nasb). Though the Shariah abhors parents from forcing their daughters to marry a particular man, it also gives the father (wali) a certain amount of power in selecting the right spouse for his daughter in order that she not make a mistake. Thus, before making the final decision both voices need to be heard and respected. In view of this it would be wrong to marry by oneself without one's wali's consultation.
