Question:

Can you please confirm the amount of Raka'aahs is to be performed when you combine Thuhr and Asr and the amount when you combine Maghrieb and Eshaa. Also, does your Niyyah change during Qasr and Jam Salaah?

Answer:

If one is traveling, one may shorten Zhuhr, Asr and Isha from four rakaas to two, provided one has passed the city border. As for combining Salahs, you may refer to a detailed reply on the site. But in short, combining will only be apparent, Zhuhr (for example) will be delayed to its end time and then offered. After a little time then Asr will be offered. That is both prayers will be prayed in their own times. As for the Niyyah, it will change in that you will be intending Qasr Salah (shortened Prayer).
