| Raising hands before and after sajdah |
Question:
Why do people raise their hands before and after sujud? Answer:
The issue of raising hands in Salah or "Raf` al-Yadayn" is an issue the jurists differed over. According to the Hanafis and Imam Malik r.a. in Mudawwana, this practice is Mansukh/abrogated. Thus it does not matter if there are hadith that tell us of it, because the last established practice of the Messenegr of Allah (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) was not to raise his hands. This is proven by the fact Imam Malik r.a. says that in Madina, the heart and centre of Islam, he saw no one doing it. Apart from this there are many hadith and narrations of the companions saying they never did this. For example: Imam Tirmidhi narrates: Ibn Masud ra. said: “Shall I not pray for you the Salah of the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam). He thus prayed and did not raise his hand except the first time.” It is also narrated by Imam Tahavi in his "Sharh Ma`ani al-Athar," hadith no.1357, p225 vol.1: Mujahid says: “I prayed behind Ibn Umar r.a. and he would not raise his hands except for the opening Takbir.”
