Question:
What is a Zina and how it is done? One of my friends is involved in this and when we try to stop him and say he is performing zina he denies it as he only hugs and kisses the girl.
Answer:
It is sinful and unlawful to even touch such a woman on the hand let alone to do the things you have mentioned. Zina is not merely when a person fornicates, rather it includes looking with lust, touching and even speaking to the opposite sex with a corrupt intention.
The following texts should be sufficient for your friend to realize there is no place in Islam for what he is involved in. You should continue to advise him against doing what he is doing, showing him the proofs below. If he still persists one must avoid him and abandon his company.
[1] Allah taala says in the Holy Qur'an: "Do not even go near Zina it is an abomination and a evil way." Chapter Bani Israil, verse 34. [2] Allah taal says: "Tell the believing men to lower their gazes..." Chapter Al-Nur; verse30. Obviously, when one is not permitted to even look at a woman unlawful for hm, how will it be then possible to kiss her or hug her, as your friend argues? [3] The Messenger of Allah said: "Let not one of you ever be alone with a woman except a close female blood relation (i.e. mother and sister)." Narrated in Bukhari and Muslim. [4] The Messenger of Allah, is reported to have commanded Ali r.a.: "O Ali do not look again (if you happen to see a woman), for verily you are forgiven the first look and will be accounted for the second." Narrated by Tirmidhi in his Jami. Again when looking is forbidden how can acts greater than that be permitted. [5] In another hadith the Messenger of Allah explicitly stated; "The eyes commit Zina, the hands commit zina and the feet of a person commit Zina...." Narrated in Mishkat.
