The basis of boycott

Question:

What is the ruling of boycotting goods of countries at war with Muslims (i.e. Israel, USA) or countries who have an agenda against Islam (e.g. the Danish cartoons). I have used the recent situation in Gaza and the issue of the Danish cartoons as an example as I want to know the conditions in which a boycott is valid and also what action should be taken by Muslims now against Israel. Can you please state the basis for the ruling as well.

Answer:

In the case of Israel where a people's land has been usurped it will be impermissible to buy products grown and produced on that land such as dates etc. The basis for the ruling is that one would be purchasing goods produced on stolen land which is not allowed and moreover one would be aiding in the continuation of the oppression of the Palestinians. As for generally purchasing goods produced in countries such as Danmark, it is contrary to the spirit of a Muslim's Iman (belief) that he continue to buy their goods. It is a moral duty that we show our offence and pain by buying from other countries. As Muslims we are commanded to prevent oppression wherever it may be, and thus it behoves each Muslim to contribute whatever he or she can according to their capacity to help his brothers and sisters.

At the very least we should busy ourselves in dua to Allah taala. It is only "the least" because it is the easiest thing we can do, and there is nothing to prevent us from doing it. It is the most powerful of means we have. The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu alaihi wa sallam) said: "The Dua is the weapon of the believer."
