Pondering over evil thoughts

Question:

Are we accountable for our thoughts that may be evil. What are the consequences of contemplating on these thoughts and how does one repent as to get close to ALLAH (SWT).

Evil thoughts that come to a person involuntarily are not punished by Allah taala, however if a person dwells knowingly upon that thought he will definitely be accountable. As for your question on how to repent, a similar question and answer can be found on the website.
