There are many Tariqahs amongst the Muslims and it is imperative that before one affiliate oneself with a particular order or seek the company of a particular Shaikh one make an effort to ascertain a few essential things.

One should first do Dua to Allah ta'ala to guide you to a Shaikh who will be a means to bring you closer to Allah ta'ala and help you improve yourself in the Deen.

Secondly, you should look carefully at this Shaikh and the Tariqa to see whether he fully upholds the commandments of the Shariah. Any Shaikh that is lax in regards to the Shariah is not a Shaikh and you should save yourself from him.

Thirdly, you should see how the scholars generally hold that Shaikh or Tariqa and do they accept it as sound. If you do these things you will insha'allah gain your answer. What a person should never do however, is to give over his life to the first person his eyes fall upon regardless of his state.
