The proof that the elbows and ankles are part of that which must be washed in Wudu is the verse in Sura al-Maidah, verse:6: "O you who believe when rise to prayer wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows and wipe your heads, (and wash) your feet to the ankles."

In Imam Al-Kasani's "Badai al-Sanai," pp67-68 and p75,he explains that the word Arabic word "Yad" means the whole arm up to the armpits. Thus the purpose of mentioning elbows (Marafiq) is to exclude what is beyond them; as such they must be included in the wash. Imam Al-Kasani later says the same kind of argument is used to establish the ankles being part of the feet.
