Question
Is animal euthanasia permitted if the Vet has reason to believe the animal is suffering or standard of living is bad?
Answer
If the animal has an ailment and one is not able to look after it or treat it, then it is permitted in Sharia to have the animal put down in a way which does not cause it any unnecessary pain.
وفي «البقالي» عن أبي يوسف أنه قال: أكره من طلب الصيد ما طلب منه للهو، قال: وأكره تعليم البازي بالطير الحي، يأخذه فيعذبه، وقال: ويعلم بالمذبوح، قال: ولا بأس بالحمار وغيره يكون به الداء ويكون صاحبها معها في بلاء و تعب يعجز عن نفقته أن يذبحها، وعنه في الدابة تقطع يدها أو رجلها أنها إن كانت في مما يؤكل يذبحها وإلا عالجها، وعن بعض المتقدمين أنه لا بأس بقطع الألية من الشاة إذا كانت الألية بحالة يمنع بقاءها الشاة أن تلتحق بالقطيع وخيف عليها الذئب
