Question

What is the Hadith, and the Ruling regardin one calling himself Imam, Shaykh, Scholar, Alim, Allamah, Mufti, etc. Here I'm not refering to someone who is called this by the people out of love or out of respect. Rather someone who addresses himself/herself in this manner. Jazakallahu Khair

Answer

To use such titles by people for themselves is to be avoided as it is not free of a level of self-praise which is discouraged by the Shariah. However, nor can it be said it is unlawful, and sometimes a person, worthy of such a title, is forced to state his title in front of others for various reasons, despite his own aversion for this.
