Question

I am trying to learn part of the Qur'an by heart, Al-Hamdulillah and I have a few questions concerning this.

1. Is there any reward in listening to the Qur'an being recited on tape/CD, even if you don't understand the meaning?

2. When I am learning the Qur'an, it requires me to repeat the same ayat constantly to memorise. Therefore, would this still be counted as Dhikr since I am repeating the same thing again and again?

3. I am currently trying to learn Surah ALIF LAM MIM Sajdah, where there is Sajdah Tilaawat. I find that 'reading' in my mind helps to remember the ayats. Is it necessary to do Sajdah if I read the Sajdah ayat 'in my head' without moving my lips? What about if these Sajdah ayats come in my head involuntarily?

4. Finally, are there any Duas etc reported in Qur'an and Hadith, which can Insha Allah assist in memorisation?

Answer

[1] A person does not get reward for listening to a recording of the Holy Qur'an. The reason for this is that the reward given for listening to the Holy Qur'an is when the recital is live and Saheeh. Though there is barakah in doin this. See Mufti Yusaf Ludhyanvi's (RA) Aap kay masail, vol.3 pg.230.

[2] Simply repeating verses for the purpose of memorisation cannot be considered Dhikr. The essence of Dhikr is to remember Allah taala, and this is not achieved by the above.

[3] Sajdah Tilaawah will only become obligatory due to the verbal recital of such a verse. merely looking at such a verse neither gives the person the reward of reciting nor is Sajdah Tilaawah wajib.

Y4] If a person is trying to memorise the Book of Allah taala it is imperative that he leave all kind of sins, big or small. Apart from this to help you in memorising you can do the following:

To awaken at the last part of the night on a Friday (because the Dua is especially accepted at this time). Next one should offer 4 rakaas nafl salah.

In the first rakaa one must recite Fatihah and Sura Yaseen

in the 2nd: Fatihah and Ha Mim al-Dukhan

in the 3rd: Fatihah and Alif Lam Mim Sajdah

in the 4th: Fatihah and Sura Mulk

Then after reciting At-tahayyaat he should say Al-Hamdulillah and Subhanaalh several times, then recite Salast wa Salaam (darood) upon the Prophet (SAW) and the other prophets. After this he should do Dua for all the Muslims, living and deceased, asking for their forgiveness. The finally having done this he should finish off with the following Dua:

ALLAHUMMARHAMNEE BI-TARK-AL-MA`AASEE ABADAMMAA ABQAYTANEE WARHAMEE ANN ATTAKALLAFA MAA LAA YA`NEENEE WARZUQNEE HUSNANNAZHAR FEEMAA YURDHEEKA A`NNEE. ALLAHUMMA BADEEA` AS-SAMAWAATE WAL-ARDH DHAL-JALAALE WAL-IKRAAM WAL-IZZATILLATI LAA TURAAMU ASALUKA YAA-ALLAH YAA RAHMAANU BI-JALAALIKA WA NOORI WAJHIKA AN TULZIMA QALBEE HIFZHA KITAABIKA KAMAA `ALLAMTANEE WARZUQNEE AN ATLOOAHU `ALAAN-NAHWIL-LADHI YURDHEEKA `ANNEE ALLAHUMMA BADEE`A AS-SAMAWAATE WAL-ARDH DHAL-JALAALE WAL-IKRAAM WAL-IZZATILLATEE LAA TURAAMU ASALUKA YAA ALLAHU YAA RAHMAANU BI-JALAALIKA WA NOORI WAJH-HI-KA AN TUNAWWIRA BI-KITAABIKA BASAREE WA AN TUtLIKA BI-HI LISAANEE WA TUFARRIJA BI-HI `AN QALBEE `AN QALBEE WA AN TASHRAHA BI-HI SADREE WA AN TAGHSILA BI-HI BADANEE FINNAHU LAA YU`IEENUNEE `ALAA AL-HAQ GHAYRUKA WA LAA YUTEEHI ILLA ANTA WA LAA HAWLA WA LAA QUWWATA ILLA BILLAHIL`ALIYYAL-`AZHEEM.

(NOTE: the non-capital "t" is to distinguish from Ta -eg in Taqwa-, the "t" is the ta in the first letter of the sura Ta ha. Also the mark: `, represents any Ayns)

A person should do this for either 3 or 5 five Jumaahs.

This dua was taught by the Messenger of Allah (SAW) to Hz. Ali r.a. who did this and after several weeks came back to the Prophet (SAW) and told him that previously he found it hard to retain the verses he learnt but ever since he started saying this Dua he was able to retain much more.
