Question

I would like to know who we should follow to start and end the holy month of Ramadhan?  Should we follow Saudi Arabia, Morroco or our own country (U.K).  I know many meetings and consultations have been held but does not seem to be a definitive answer.  Even within the various Muslim sub-groups scholars have different views.  So as lay people who do we actually follow?

Answer

The issue really is not as difficult as people are making out.  The reason for this is that within the Hanafi school there is room to accomodate both views (of following the calculations of the observatory and following the sighting in another country). So the real the issue is that of choosing one of either and then getting the whole community to agree to it which, in a country where there is no central binding religious authority, creates a problem. Therefore, an individual should follow the view being followed by the majority of the close family members around him/her to prevent disunity and fitnah.
