I have recently started Arabic language and Tajweed classes in order to try and understand the Qur'an in Arabic. However, in the meantime, I am currently reciting from a Qur'an that has the Abdullah Yusuf Ali translation. I have heard that this translation is not the best. Which English translation of the Qur'an would you recommend?

Recently Mufti Taqi Uthmani has published a translation with a succinct commentary. It is much more authoritative than any of the translations previously available. You may be able to order it from Azhar Academy online.
