The Tajweed course at As-Suffa Institute is an opportunity for anyone to come and learn how to recite the book of Allah Most High. To recite it correctly is an obligation on every Muslim, as we must recite the Qur'an in our prayers. It is a guiding light for mankind, the message of our Lord to humanity, and to recite it (whether one understands the meaning or not) is also a source of reward.

Tajweed refers to perfecting one's recitation of the Qur'an, by learning the correct pronounciation of the Arabic letters, the rules and ways of joining them as well as how to stretch sounds and start and stop in the right manner. The course has been designed such that one progresses gradually over the levels, learning new rules and reciting one-to-one to a teacher on a weekly basis so that each student can perfect his or her recitation.
Whether you have never studied tajweed before or have learnt in the past (and maybe forgotten) then this class will be suitable for whatever your background. Register today to take your first step on the journey to be amongst the company of the noble angels!

This level begins to introduce the rules of tajweed, looking at the theory behind the letters, the differences between heavy and light letters, the concept of ghunna and the rules of nun sakin. The aim is for the student to reach a fluent, even if slow, pace of reading whilst applying the rules covered.

This level covers a number of different rules of tajweed, including qalqalah, hamza, meem sakin, ra, lam and introduces the concept of madd. The student by the end of this level should be able to apply all of the rules covered whilst also reading more confidently than the first two levels.

This level is focused on correct lengthening and stopping in recitation, and introduces the idea of speeds of reading. This level is an additional stage between levels 3 and 4 in which a student has the opportunity to work 1 on 1 with their teacher for a time slot each week in which they will work purely on the fluency of the student's recitation and applying all of the rules that have been studied so far.

This is the final level of the tajweed course, and covers some of the less common rules, such as different types of idgham and rare symbols, as well as going into more detail about the characteristics (sifat) of letters. Students will also be briefly introduced to the concept of the qira'at which will encourage them to undertake further study after this course. By the end of this level the student should be able to read the Qur'an fluently with few mistakes, and should be comfortable with the majority of rules related to reciting the Qur'an.
