How did I first become involved with As-Suffa?

I first became involved when I enrolled as a student in the Heirs of the Scholars course. I instantly loved the way we were taught as we were always encouraged to reach our potential. Aside from our studies, we were also encouraged to volunteer and help out whenever we can, and that’s when I started my volunteering journey with As-Suffa.

How did I start volunteering at As-Suffa?

I initially started helping out at one and two day course events and over time I became more involved in other projects. The great thing about volunteering for As-Suffa is that there is something for everyone to do, and your strengths are always taken into account.

For example, I was asked to help out with the Youth Club Project, as I expressed an interest in getting involved in something creative. At the beginning, I would just assist the leaders to run sessions but over time and as I gained experience, I was able to develop and start taking on a more leadership role involving the planning of lessons and creative activities for the youth. It’s amazing how far we have come now and it was all down to volunteers and their willingness to help in whatever way they could. Just a few hours here and there could really make all the difference!

What was my first impression of As-Suffa?

Definitely welcoming – I feel like everyone is treated equally here. I think it’s so important to have a welcoming place especially when you want to learn something new or be involved in something new. It’s nice knowing that you have friendly, supportive people around you that are willing to help you if you need it.

What do I do when I’m not volunteering?

I work part time during the week and study part time at As-Suffa. Any free time I get I will spend doing something creative – and often, this helps when I need to plan for activities for the Youth Club Project!

What’s the advice I would give if someone was thinking about volunteering?

Stop thinking and start doing! I would definitely recommend others to get involved as there are so many opportunities to help you grow and develop into more skilled people, and it helps with job interviews too!
